Illumination (popularly known as Illu) is a festival unique to IIT Kharagpur. It gains inspiration from and is celebrated on the day of Diwali, the festival of lights. The process was started by Azad Hall as a celebration of Diwali but it later became a competition. The chatais are sometimes even of the order of 20 feet in height, and overall some 20,000 lamps are lighted. Traditionally, themes from the Ramayan and the Mahabharat have been popular choices.
